Are you sure, that you have loaded the correct pcm module?

I have snd_via82c686.ko and snd_pcm.ko for my via82c686

cat /dev/sndstat 
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm)
Installed devices:
pcm0: <VIA VT82C686A> at io 0xdc00 irq 3 (1p/1r/0v channels duplex)

What does a "cat /dev/sndstat" show?
