In the mean time, my laptop got through today's -CURRENT installworld OK, after trying the 2nd of Peter's suggested aproaches (paraphrasing, cd /usr/src/share && cd `make -V .OBJDIR` && rm -fr *; he also suggested ensuring that the target of the 2nd "cd" wasn't something of value first).
