I'm not sure whether this is a better solution or not. Here's what I've done.

When I su to root and run xemacs, I was getting a similar error. To overcome 
it without modifying my security level, I added the following to root's 
.bashrc (replacing username with my normal user account):

alias xemacs="XAUTHORITY=~[username]/.Xauthority xemacs"

Now I can su to root and run xemacs using the access granted to the normal 
user.
