I hate following up to myself, but i did some further testing, and the same problem exists in 2.2.7-STABLE and 3.0 a.out... Those don't panic, normally but do hang and/or reboot. Furthemore, manually merging the latest if_de from NetBSD-current (v 1.80 from 9/25/98) didn't change a thing...
