If you're using kdm, you can change this by tweaking sessreg's invocation in /usr/local/share/config/kdm/Xstartup to something like: exec sessreg -a -l console -h $DISPLAY -x /usr/local/share/config/kdm/Xservers -u /var/run/utmp $USER You'll also have to tweak /usr/local/share/config/kdm/Xreset to remove the sessreg utmp entry: exec sessreg -d -l console -h $DISPLAY -x /usr/local/share/config/kdm/Xservers -u /var/run/utmp $USER Alternatively you can remove the sessreg invocation in both files, or perhaps fix w/uptime to not display errors (since Linux & Solaris handles sessreg's utmp entries just fine).
