Yes, I saw NetBSD commits that implied it could.  However, at this point
dealing with 4.4-RELEASE issues is more important.  I got things to the
point that all options to file(1) now worked and didn't annoy the user.

Unless I find that my changes today break the 4.4 release build, I'll
hold off a few weeks on dealing with this.
