Search on "freebsd graphics drivers intel gm965" led to forums.freebsd.org thread which mentioned drm-kmod. I instantly remembered doing something with this years and years ago. Installing drm-kmod and adding kld_list="i915kms" to rc.conf as hinted in the install message fixed the problem. Apologies for forgetting.help
