You might be able to avoid this by using the st command from 1.1.5.1
(I don't think we have a 2.x equivalent yet) to set blocksize to
0 (for variable length blocks). Works for me with my Exabyte 8mm.

This panic reminds me of what I was getting before applying the fix
that John Hay posted awhile back (on 2/15, I think). His fix did
get incorporated into -current.
