For the record, this happened because the patch to the Makefile include the $FreeBSD$ line as part of the context. Naturally, applying a 3.4 patch to 5-current caused the patch to fail. Unfortunately, I was not paying close enough attention and didn't notice that the Makefile patch had not applied.
