The answers to your questions depend on which RAID level you are thinking
about.

IMHO RAID3/5 is only useful if you are short on money.  The write 
performance penalty and the money to overcome it are better spent on 
more drives to build a simple mirroring system.  Especially on small 
(15-20 gig) News filesystems.

On the other hand, RAID3/5 may have some benefit for truly large
installations.

mirroring is also sometimes called RAID1.
