We run FreeBSD on CompactFlash (like is used in digital cameras) with 
great success.

The links above have mailing list archives and links that should be 
helpful for you.

We have a CompactFlash <-> IDE driver, so that camera memory unit looks 
just
like a little IDE drive.  We install onto that from a desktop and put 
the unit into the hardware.
