After labeling the hard disk, newfs gives out an error message like: "newfs: partition 'a' is unavailable" I have created only one partition with 'A' of 'F' key in the fdisk program. I tried the same procedure on a desktop PC with IDE hard disk, there's no such problem. CD-ROM install of 4.2-RELEASE works fine on those boxes, too.
