Can't you try to boot a 3.4R bootfloppy to see what happens? Probably the
easiest thing to try.

MO drives generally stink as far as firmware goes. Any chance you can try
a plain, known-good HD? I have much better experiences with 2740
I have not received an answer yet from the guy running a [12]740-based system
about his experiences with 3.4
