I was just looking at running named in -current [@2 days old] as uid/gid bind. It seems all ok except that the pid file seems to be compiled in , which is /var/run/named.pid. running as bind.bind named can't handle the file , unless the permissions on /var/run are changed , which I assume I shouldn't do.
