Actually I think it might be because in FreeBSD, you actually have to read to understand what you're doing. Linux howtos spoonfeed you. I've met a lot of very capable Linux admistrators but most are stuck with their web interfaces (*cough* webmin *cough*) and seem to rely on forums and mailing lists when there's a problem, not on documentation that already exists.
