When I assembled the PC it was in the basement -- temperature probably in the high 60's -- the fan was/is working and the case was opened. If the problem is overheating, then I'd have to guess that the fan is inadequate... I suppose I could hang the PC out the window this winter, or make space in my refrigerator, but I'd rather not! ;-) Seriously though, is it reasonable to suspect that with the fan running and the case opened, that there's an overheating problem in the normal 72-degree ambient temperature?
