I'm afraid it really does make a difference.  I was using a SB 16 and when I
did a ./MAKEDEV snd0, I could not get the card to work.  Taking a closer look
at dmesg, the card appeared as sbc1.  So, I took a flyer and did ./MAKEDEV snd1
and lo and behold, I had sound.
