Either one produces the same results.  You may be on to something with DGA.
I thought DGA was automatically enabled in my X server, but possibly not.
I'll look into it.  Is this an Option flag in my Modules section?

If it's any help at all, I do get an output from fxtv -debug startup that
reports DGA info.
