While I've done my best to make everything transparent, I personally wouldn't want to download binaries from sources other than official or trusted. Unfortunately the ports framework is not able to handle gradle dependencies like it does with Cargo crates or go modules. The method we have switched to now is used by other ports that build with gradle, so it seems to be the only viable solution for the time being. It's the only way to build locally and offline when using poudriere.
