"I know a guy" who cut the tx wires in a patch cable that he uses to
connect his box to networks to be monitored.  You can be sure there are no
transmissions this way :).  You might have link problems with some
hubs/network cards and there are a vareity of ways to get around them
depending on what the problems are...
