The BSD license is important, in that it does not discriminate
against developers or attempt to take something from you (as the GPL
does). However, the notion of "buy-in" is vitally important. It's
what turns something like FreeBSD from a hobbyists' playground to
something significant, important, and vital. Even users who don't
contribute code are lending support to the platform by becoming
involved.

Actually, DARPA gave BSD its TCP/IP stack. Bill was merely one
of the people who were funded to do it.
