WHAT I DID:
-----------
I just installed KDE and started using it a few days ago.
I am using FreeBSD 2.2-Stable with XFree86.

To start kde, I put the line:
startkde
in my home directory file ".xinitrc"
Then from a command line: startx

HOW DID I KNOW THAT?
--------------------
1. http://www.kde.org/
2. Left hand side, menus: "Documentation"
3. See some flags, I selected "English"
4. Select "FAQ"
5. Specific to your question, look at FAQ 3.7 "How do I start KDE?"

At that same web site is lots of other information about KDE.
