This doesn't make sense to me.  zfsd does not do anything that would interf=
ere
with some other process reading zvols.  I think there must be something else
going on.  Two things to check:

1) What does "zpool status" show on the host, when the guest is unable to b=
oot?
2) What does "top" show on the host at that time?  Is zfsd spinning the CPU?
