But I have always wondered why a device that is able to support auto-negotiation should abstain from sending its mode parameters only because its operation mode has been manually specified. The em driver in FreeBSD has been developed and maintained by Intel employees and I'd assume that they knew the standard (Jack F Vogel, Eric Joyner).
