Yes.  It make it impossible to build tree off a cdrom (since you had
to create the obj links).  One couldn't build the same tree with
multiple architectures as well, which is trivial to do today with
MAKEOBJDIRPREFIX.  There were other problems too with stale links and
the like, but it has been so long that I've forgotten them.
