After installing the package gcc42 (gcc-4.2.5_20080702) using "pkg_add -R gcc42" on my FreeBSD 7.1 system, R starts without any further configuration. It seems that the R package only lacks of a dependency on gcc42 (or gcc43 on newer systems?).
