The ctl device is intercepted at the top in scsi_open at a single point and should be completely reliable. Much of the work I did involved pulling duplicated code into a common point. Unfortunately it tends to sneak back in - a good reason for an occasional rewrite (with a commitment to backward support of user interfaces).
