I have a couple of 2.2.8 systems, and a 2.1.7 running.  I think if I
were to try to upgrade them, I'd do a binary install of 4.0 (or
4.1?) and make sure the 2.2 compatability libraries were installed.

That's gotta be faster and easier than the several-step download and
compile you're contemplating.
