   You can also create the log files in their own directory (in which
normal users don't have write permission) and create symlinks in ~user
pointing to that log directory. Depending upon the exact needs this method
protects the system and is a lot easier than managing a whole system of
userids. Again, running non-root is good. You can create a UID for nothing
but this task in fact.
