The ports get the source, apply patches, and build the source.  You
can easily read the patches and see if there's anything you don't
like.  As the patches are much smaller than the source, it shouldn't
be a burden.

Yes.  Take advantage of the fact that dozens of people have invested
thousands of hours to make ssh2 and thousands of other applications
work well on FreeBSD.  Take advantage of the fact that the exact problem
you're having is one that we have already solved.  Use the Ports
Collection, or at least read the patches which address exactly the
problem you're having.
