For me with FreeBSD -current as of last night I have no problems doing
this:
netstat -I ed0 -w 1
input (ed0) output
packets errs bytes packets errs bytes colls
1 0 60 1 0 186 0
1 0 60 1 0 138 0
1 0 60 1 0 138 0

Sorry I don't have a solution for -stable, but it is working in -current.
