Have a look in /usr/ports/news. For non free, I have found DNEWS to be a
decent value.  I bought a copy a couple of years ago (back in the inn 1.7.x
days, and it was far more reliable and scalable back then compared to innd.
No idea if innd has caught up, but the DNEWS of today (native 4.x port)
gives great performance on FreeBSD and manages a couple of nearly full
feeds (20Mb/s incoming) on about 300Gig of storage space for me.
