FYI, I've been running with this patch installed on my 4-STABLE box for almost four days now (would have been longer except for a power outage). This is much longer than any of my previous uptimes since this problem started occurring (which were generally on the order of a day or so), so I have at least a warm fuzzy feeling about the code now.
