[cjohnson@shemp cjohnson]$ host www.root.com
www.root.com is a nickname for www.freebsd.org
www.freebsd.org is a nickname for freefall.freebsd.org
freefall.freebsd.org has address 204.216.27.21
freefall.freebsd.org mail is handled (pri=10) by hub.FreeBSD.org

www.root.com has a CNAME record which points to www.freebsd.org, so when you
aim your browser at www.root.com, that's what you get. "whois root.com"
indicates that the domain root.com belongs to David Greenman, who's one of the
founders of the FreeBSD project:

Chris
