Did you use the right parameters for your monitor? Does not sound like it. the <CTRL><ALT><KP+>/<KP-> will work... but you need to be able to support more than one resolution.. Ie... 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 is what you can usually change between. Read the XF86_SVGA Man page for more details.
