I can't reproduce the Perl test failure here:

3-sec# cd /usr/ports/lang/perl5.8
4-sec# make && make test
[ ... ]
t/pod/special_seqs........................ok
t/x2p/s2p.................................ok
All tests successful.

...so I'd guess it's something different with your system or environment.  Do 
you have an old version of OpenSSL floating around in /usr/local, maybe?
