I've been doing it all the time since 4.0 and I've never destroyed
anything during it. I've had my shares of emergency drives to our
colo, but never because of an update. Oh well once, but I suspect there
went something different wrong as the console had shown a broken FS on
/usr which a manual run of fsck fixed. I suppose you could patch the
startup scripts to run make installworld in single user but why
bother...
