Another, maybe stupid, as I don't know how many changes this will involve, suggestion is, to a define a macro that actually uses these variables, like #define _USE(x) (x=x) A good compiler schould be able to optimize this away. the use of this macro in the right places would eliminate the warnings, and still have gcc issue warnings when variables are not used in other functions.
