Yes, I must admit that it sounds like that's the cause of my problem.

Unfortunately, I'd rather not upgrade the machine at this point in time if
I can avoid it...  So, I will try to implement Bruce's suggestion to OR
SWI_NET_MASK into SW_TTY_MASK in machine/spl.h to see if that solves the
problem.
