Early 35470As didn't complain either. I don't have a functional one at the moment, but I recollect that I got a different error with this one (in fact, it was an old HP DDS tape that wasn't coded either :-). My current drive is a C1533, and it seems to handle the tape with no problems, so I can't check the message. Greg
