What I'd do for this kind of testing is equip a FreeBSD machine with a well-known work SCSI-controller (probably an NCR), and emulate a target from that end :-) It is possible this is due to my lack of hardware building experience, but I still like FreeBSD better than microcontrollers :-) Eivind.
