Long way around the barn, but this worked: `echo -n '$pwd1[$a]' | pw useradd -n $name -c $fullname -d $userhome -s $s -m -h 0`; I replaced all of the encrypted stuff and simplified the program. It is still a mystery as to why it works in adduser, why the encrypted password looks the same as program output and under vipw, but the user cannot login with it. Oh well.
