Things to check:  Do you perhaps have "." in your PATH on either
machine?  Bad idea for root, and has been known to cause strange
beavior in build/install.  Have you measured the performance
gain you get by building for a specific CPUTYPE?  Your life would
be simplified immensely by not doing that.

You might also consider rebooting after the installkernel.
