I installed linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.05 as well, but I had to make a small change to my setup. First, I had to install as make ONLY_FOR_ARCHS=3D"i386 amd64" install and then with the installed linux_base from ports it didn't create the following file with contents: /compat/linux/etc/ld.so.conf /usr/X11R6/lib Adding that allowed me to do more with java.
