Are there some recommended FW chipsets or > something to avoid ? See section 3.12 of the hardware notes, the supported chipsets are listed there. I've been using an external FireWire HD (Maxtor 5000DV) with FreeBSD 4.10 and 4.11 for more than a year now and I've had no problems. My system has ASUS P4B-533E motherboard with integrated FireWire controller: fwohci0: <NEC uPD72874> mem 0xed800000-0xed800fff irq 12 at device 4.0 on pci2 fwohci0: OHCI version 1.0 (ROM=1) fwohci0: No. of Isochronous channel is 4. fwohci0: EUI64 00:e0:18:00:00:05:6b:74 fwohci0: Phy 1394a available S400, 3 ports. fwohci0: Link S400, max_rec 2048 bytes. firewire0: <IEEE1394(FireWire) bus> on fwohci0 sbp0: <SBP-2/SCSI over FireWire> on firewire0 --- ... If it wasn't for C, we'd be using BASI, PASAL and OBOL!
