I've replaced the card with an nvidia now which behaves almost as the radeon did a year ago; I can start X once, when starting it for a second time it freezes. For now, I will have to make do with that, I need the machine for regular use. All of these problems sure makes me miss the Amiga, where the hardware was known and worked good as long as it didn't have defects in the hardware itself.
