(Disclaimer: I am speaking from possibly outdated knowledge here, so please don't kill me if I'm wrong.) GNOME is an interesting beast, in that it is not a window manager, it is a "desktop environment." If you want to run GNOME, you still have to have a window manager. Enlightenment just happened to be the window manager set up as default. If you want something with a smalled footprint, try out Sawmill or Blackbox, I've heard good things about both.
