"Replacing" means what in this context?

Why do you create a bsdlabel on the slices when you don't use it then?

I suspect that's the source of the problems you have.

Take the bsdlabel as it is generated by "bsdlabel -w", and don't replace 
anything in there.  Use the 'a' partition.
