Dominic, being out to a party last night, I missed the start of the thread, but... What you have to do is burn the .iso image to a CD, using 'image' mode or whatever the program you're using calls it. When the CD is burned, you should not see on the disk you prepared only one file called SOMETHING.iso, but a bunch of other files. These are the contents of the disk. If you want to see what the image contains, you can even use your Linux's loop device (if it's compiled into your kernel, or as a module), and mount the image while your linux has been booted. Try using: # mount /where/the/iso/image/is/stored.iso /mnt -o loop=/dev/loop0 and then browse /mnt to see what files the ISO-image contains. As far as installation is concerned, if you think that the image you've burned is not bootable, or it does not boot properly for any other reason [it seems I can recall some messages about 3.4-X ISO's having problems at booting], you can prepare a pair of boot disks, and use them for starting the installation. Don't worry about your CDROM, since I have a Mitsumi 48x and it works quite nicely with FreeBSD. Once you get your installation to boot [from the CD-burned ISO, or from boot disks, whatever] you should have no problems with FreeBSD "seeing" your cdrom device :) Ciao. -- Giorgos Keramidas, < keramida @ ceid . upatras . gr > For my public PGP key: finger keramida@diogenis.ceid.upatras.gr PGP fingerprint, phone and address in the headers of this message.
