Hey, this looks familiar!

I got the same problem when I tried to install using FreeBSD 4.0 (with
boot virus checking on). The next day, I had the FreeBSD 4.1.1 CD,
and read about this problem in the archives for this list. FreeBSD 4.1.1
and/or turning off boot virus checking (I did both at the same time)
fixed this problem, and I installed FreeBSD just fine.
Look in the archives for "Athlon Boot Problem", specifically, a post from
John Baldwin on 19 July 2000. It explained everything.
HTH.
Later,

PS: I suppose it's time to update some of my randomly-selected
.signature files, eh? After all, they should say FreeBSD 4.1.1,
not Linux 2.2.12. :-) Yet another thing on my TODO list
(relating to my new computer)....
